The illegal street drug ecstasy refers to MDMA or 3,4 methylenedioxy-methamphetamine. MDMA is the purest form, however, it is harder to come by. Ecstasy is a synthetic drug classified as a stimulant with hallucinogenic properties. Molly is another name for ecstasy made from MDMA, but ecstasy is used to describe the designer version in pill or tablet form. While molly refers to the white powder or crystal-like substance.
MDMA, ecstasy, and molly were initially popular in the nightclub scene and at all-night dance parties (“raves”). However, ecstasy affects a broader range of people such as college students trying to have a good time, who more commonly call ecstasy “E” or Molly. Below are some frequently asked questions regarding MDMA and the effects it has on people abusing this drug.
How to Use MDMA, Ecstacy, Molly
The different ways people use MDMA are by swallowing, snorting, smoking, or injecting it. When swallowing any form of MDMA it is absorbed into the bloodstream through the small intestine and stomach. Choosing to snort this drug it is absorbed into the bloodstream through the membranes in the nose. When injected it goes directly into the bloodstream and makes its way to the brain. Finally, when smoked the drug enters the bloodstream through the lungs and enters the brain.
How MDMA Makes You Feel
Either form of MDMA, whether that being ecstasy or molly or the pure form, gives the same effects on the body. Many users of these “party drugs” are expecting their senses to be heightened especially when attending dance clubs and raves that include music and light shows. This works by the drug interfering with the brain’s pleasure center and natural levels of dopamine.
Some of the main effects people experience when using include:
- Euphoria
- Heightened senses
- Calmness and relaxation
- Long-lasting energy
- Empathy for others
- Lowered inhibitions
Although many people experience heightened pleasure and happiness when using this drug because senses are heightened it could trigger feelings of depression and anxiety. The high from using MDMA last between 3 to 6 hours depending on the person and if the drug was mixed with others like cocaine, LSD, or heroin.
Negative Side Effects
Although these drugs seem harmless, even when used only a few times can cause many negative side effects to the brain and body. For example, ecstasy can cause dangerously high blood pressure (hypertension) and faintness. In more severe cases it has a history of inducing panic attacks, seizures and even causing death when mixed with other drugs like alcohol or cocaine.
Even though the high experienced from these drugs can last several hours, the comedown can last days. Some of the side effects when coming down from this drug are:
- Nausea
- Muscle cramping
- Teeth clenching
- Blurred vision
- Chills
- Sweating
- Hallucinating
- Increased heart rate
- Confusion
- Irritability
- Depression
- Sleep issues
- Anxiety
- Decreased appetite
Are These Drugs Addictive
The short answer is yes ecstasy can be addictive. When a person becomes addicted to ecstasy they are undergoing withdrawal symptoms when the drug is not present in their system as well as cravings for more of it. Oftentimes, if someone is abusing the use of MDMA, ecstasy, or molly it is more likely to turn into a gateway drug. This means that when using these party drugs the more addictive and dangerous drugs, like cocaine and heroin, are easily introduced.
